A haiku culture flourished in Itami of the Edo Period around a thriving
sake brewing industry. This library was launched by methodically adding
a collection of the late Rihei Okada (Kakimori by penname) to the plethora
of cultural assets accumulated at that time. The collection contains some
9,500 pieces amongst books, scrolls and poems on paper strips, and is considered
the one of the three biggest collections of haiku poetry in Japan alongside
the Jachiku and Chikurei Collection of The University of Tokyo Library
System and the Wataya Collection of the Tenri Central Library. |
